Autism: Emerging From Within
All of my life I have known there was something different about me. It was very rare for me to talk right up into my 20’s. Even now, at nearly 40, I struggle to speak a lot of the time. Others thought I was shy, but I knew that it was more a matter of connections. My thoughts were loud, and I could easily put them on paper, but it was often impossible for me to connect those thoughts into words to share with others.
Very recently, I was diagnosed with autism. I was told that I have an expressive language disability. That is the reason why I have been able to talk, but not able to share for most of my life. I also have multiple sensory issues, the most prominent being in food texture.
Secondary to my autism, I have also been diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, depression, and some degree of obsessive compulsive disorder.
While I struggle to speak, I do love to write. I believe that I have a lot to share in my experiences on this planet, and hope that by sharing my story, others may be helped along the way.

Poetry/writing often bypasses the brain as it comes directly from the heart, I believe anyway and that is where your lovely words certainly seem to stem from – good luck and happy life to you 🙂

Wow! I didn’t even know what Asperger was until I was about 45. I thought I was a freak and was so ashamed of my hands flapping. It was extremely helpful to find out there are other people like me out there, and now I’m not embarrassed anymore. I was also selectively mute as a child, struggling to fit the images in my head into words. I also have anhedonia, insomnia, and alexethymia.
I also suffer from general anxiety, ocd, and my social phobia was so bad, I didn’t dare go to Mcdonald to order a burger. But I kind of got over it eventually. It was a struggle. Made it difficult to go for a job interview, deal with people on the job, and learn martial arts.
Anxiety and ocd bother me, Asperger itself doesn’t.

My son, in his twenties, has a number of the symptoms you described about yourself. You are brave. I hope my son will be brave enough to face and talk about certain aspects of himself as well someday. He’s not ready yet.
